How To Hack the In The Groove PS2 Disc

Postby lilbart90 on Tue Sep 18, 2007 1:33 am

Make Sure you download the PS2 Tools

DOWNLOAD HERE

Here is a super in depth guide on how to do this, since a lot of people seem to be having problems.

First, Rip all of the files from the ITG PS2 disc (if you don't want ITG1 songs, just rip everything except for files that start with D in the PCKS folder, but you do need DA0A****.PCK). You do not need the PCK.IDX file.

Next, take the songs you want to add. Convert all music files to a 48 KHZ OGG vorbis file (I used audacity and goldwave to do this, goldwave has a batch convert so its easier, but it didn't accept some of my MP3s, so for that, I used Audacity). Make sure all banners are .PNG 256x80, and backrounds are also .PNG 320x240 (I used "Picture Resize Genius" to do this). Also, make sure all songs are in the .sm format (DWI isn't tested, feel free to do that). BGVideos, if any, should be 320x240 Mpeg 1 30 FPS, and I'm not even sure if it would work like that.

NOTE: Feel free to test formats not listed, and tell if it works.

Now that everything is in the right format, put everything that you want to pack on the root of the drive that you are going to pack off of (meaning, for songs, pack it in C:\Songs\In The Groove 2\etc). The file structure should be exactly the same as StepMania. Open up the PCK Packer. Click on "Browse for Source File Folder" and choose the folder(s) that you want to pack. Now, for songs, choose "Datafile" and check "Generate Cache". In the comment, put "default[insert anything here]" (meaning, you can have any comment, as long as put default at the beginning) then click "Choose Filename & Save" and choose where you want to save it. Do NOT change the filename.

After all that, make sure all the PCK files you want on your ITG ISO are in the same folder. Open up PCK IDX Wrapper. Click on "Browse for PCK file folder" and navigate to the folder with all of your PCKs in it. Then just click on "Generate IDX file" and it will create a PCK.IDX for you.

Now, open up Sony CD/DVD Generator. Choose new project then single layer DVD. Drag N Drop all of the files from ITGPS2 in this exact order:
Code: Select all
1. the .IMG
2. PCKS
3. SLUS 211.77
4. SYSTEM.CNF
5. BOOT.PAK

Also, you need to go into the volume tab in CD/DVD gen and enter some stuff in those (I'm not sure if everything is needed, but its probably a good idea to do it all)

Code: Select all
DISC NAME: SLUS 21177
PRODUCER NAME: PLAYSTATION
License Area: America
Copyright Holder: ROXOR GAMES
Volume: IN_THE_GROOVE
Publisher: REDOCTANE
Volume Set: 1
Data Preparer: GLENN MAYNARD

THIS STEP IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE BUILDING ISOS WITH NO ITG1 SONGS: If you are getting an error about how it hasn't reached the minimum sector or something like that, find a dummy file (I just use the 400ish MB song file from ITG because I had it handy) and put it in the root of the ISO after BOOT.PAK.

Now, go to File>Export IML File. Open up IML2ISO and choose that file then click build ISO. Burn the ISO and enjoy.

This is all assuming you're adding songs.

it wouldnt matter which way you do it. The reason those dont work is because those songs have rolls in them. They are only for ITG2 not ITG1 so it will crash because it cant understand them. You can use stepmania editor to remove the rolls so it would work. I recommend replacing them with freeze arrows this way its almost the same feel. In The Groove 2 BETA will though, but i dont know how to get custom songs on there just yet.

Rolls are those arrows that look like freeze arrows, but they require you to keep pressing the key in to sustain the step. So if you get a left arrow that is a roll, you need to keep on taping the left arrow until the roll is completed, or else you drop it (Which is like letting go during holding down a freeze arrow)

i tried editing the song bamble bee, cryosleep, ride the bass, which i think have rolls because they hang when i use my ITGPS2 hack... i used Stepmania, but i cannot determine which is a normal freeze arrow and the roll arrow.... do you have a sample picture of a roll arrow compared to a freeze arrow? thank you!!!!! 8)

in stepmania 3.9 u can not see the rolls, u have to have 4.0 or 3.95 to see them. And in 4.0 and 3.95 i believe the rolls are blue looking freeze arrows.

With the default noteskin, they're purple, but close enough. :)

The guide works splendidly. At first I missed that DA0A****.PCK is needed.

My concept disk was DWI Extreme S-Series with DWI Extreme Glistening To Infinity 1-4 and the first two Best Of compilations, and I threw on DWInsanity's J-Paradise Super Megamix and Cyber Trance presents AYU Trance 2 for fun. Unfortunately due to the way DWI Extreme packs their simfiles, the backgrounds are not coded into the .sm files so I will have to go through all of them and add the proper parameters, which will be a pain. J-Paradise Super Megamix, which is 14 minutes long, loaded successfully, but Cyber Trance presents AYU Trance 2 and DWI Extreme's Swing City Miami Friday, both of which are 36 minutes long, failed to load. I believe I used oggLengthPatch properly with both songs, so perhaps there is a problem with loading songs that are that long.

I will have a lot of fun compiling my own ITG mixes. Thanks for the guide and the tools.

ITG2 hack?

Postby BubbleBobble on Mon Jun 22, 2009 7:35 pm

couple of questions

does this work with ITG2 for PS2? or only for ITG1?

second

does anyone know a rough estimate of how many GB worth of songs you can fit on the disc? I'm guessing 2 GB and some change, but haven't definitively figured it out, so I thought I would ask :)

thanks for any help you can give me
