Soft Mod Your PS2 to Play Your Custom ITG Disk

Postby Punkduderer on Thu Sep 27, 2007 10:48 pm

What is a Softmod? A softmod is a software modification that always you to play games that aren't on specially made DVD Discs. Is it safe, Yes it is usually safe except there is some debat on whether it will ware out your ps2 laser or not. So how do I do it? Read Below.
How to Softmod a PS2 Using a Gameshark
(This only works with a fat PS2)
(Written in an Idiot-Proof Format)
Ok, it’s actually pretty simple so here’s how it works. It looks long but that’s a 1 time thing, then the rest you do in under a minute, I timed myself.

Part 1:

What You Need:
A Playstation 2 (fat version) (*duh*)
Any Version of Gameshark for the PS2 should work (I have a 1.2, you only need it once)
An official, not burned, PS2 Game
An official, not burned PS1 Game
A plastic card (something like an old credit card or gift card)
A USB Drive
And then a couple files:
cog-swap.elf
Download:
Code: Select all
(http://www.exploitstation.com/files/elfs.html)

uLaunchElf (I used the 3.71 version)
Download:
Code: Select all
(http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=launchers.html)

Independence Compiler 3.0
Download:
Code: Select all
(http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=exploit.html)

PS2 SaveBuilder
Download:
Code: Select all
(http://www.ps2savetools.com/download.php?lid=74&op=viewdownloaddetails&ttitle=PS2_Save_Builder)

You need to install WinRaR to open the RaR files:
Download:
Code: Select all
(http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm)

choose the version you need.

Remember Where You Save Everything

Part 2:

Step 1: Ok once you have everything you need to make a file for your trigger disc (the trigger disc is also known as the PS1 game you have):

Open Independence Compiler 3.0

Ok now look at your PS1 disc. It should have an SLUS Number on it, somewhere on the front of the disc in small font. For the disc I’m using, Frogger, it has the SLUS number as “SLUS-00506”. So in the Independence Compiler under step 1: TitleDB I would type in “SLUS_005.06” (Do not put quotes around it when you type it in) in the Current ID Box.
To figure out what you should put in the Current ID Box just change the hyphen (-) to an underscore ( _ ) and a period after the 3rd number. (example Disc says SLUS-00937, I would type in SLUS_009.37)
After you type that in the box click Add. And a number will appear in the left box.

Step 2:
Ok remember where you saved the uLauchElf file. If you did, open the file and drag the file uLaunchELF to your desktop.
Now in the Independence Compiler under Step 2: Loader choose other: and it will ask you for where the other file is so just navigate to your desktop under the uLaunchElf folder and select the Boot.elf file.

Step 3: Exploit Options Totally ignore this it will just waste space on your memory card.
Step 4: IP Options
Select “No”
Step 5: Region
If you live in the U.S. you are most likely NTSC so do not change.
Step 6: Dummy File
Ignore this.
Step 7: Configuration Files
Make sure the Keylauncher is uncheck marked.
Output Format
Choose Memory Card (XPS)
Installer Only:
Choose “No”

Click the start button. It will say “You don’t have any ELF files in the complication! Continue anyways?” Click Yes to this.
Black boxes will come up on your screen really fast. It’s ok. Its just building your file that you’ll need in step 3. Then in the Indepence Compiler it will say “An XPS file has been built here C:\AusDigital\”. Click Ok. And close the Independence Compiler.

Part 3:
Ok, open up the PS2 Save Builder. Then go to file->open and if your not already in the AusDigital folder direct it to C:\AusDigital, select the ausdigital.xps and click open. You’ll get something like this:
Image

Go to file save as and click under the save as type and choose sharkport (*.md) and click save. Now go to C:\AusDigiatal. You’ll see 2 files, one of them is ausdigital.md. Rename ausdigital.md to EXPLOIT.ps2. Congratulations You’ve done the hardest part. Now move the EXPLOIT.ps2 to your USB stick. While your adding things to the USB add the cog-swap.elf to it.

Part 4: Make a Slide Card

Ok, away from the computer a little bit. Grab your plastic card and cut it until you get the shape below, ACTUALLY DO THE MEASUREMENTS AND CUT DO NOT JUST COPY THE SHAPE.

There’s an awesome video of how to make one here:
Code: Select all

Part 5: Using the Gameshark
Ok, turn on your ps2 and insert the Gameshark disc DO NOT INSERT THE USB YET. Let it do its little loading thing and then at the main screen choose Memory Manager. Once the disc is in it will ask you if you want to load game saves, choose NO. Then insert the USB Stick. Once in you will see 2 columns, 1 is source and the other is target. Using the R1, R2, L1, and L2, make the USB your source column. Press O on your USB drive and choose copy to source. Your System Configuration will now be turned into a question mark if you did it right. No move the cog-swap.elf to your memory card (Target). Congrats the Exploit is installed.

Part 6: This is the Part You Have to Do Every Time
1.Insert the PS1 game that is your trigger disc.
2. Wait for it to load and choose file browser (you’re using the D-pad and the O button unless told otherwise to select)
3. Ok choose mc0:/, press O and select BADATA-System (for U.S.)
4. Select CogSwap.elf, Press O and it will load.
5. Now once the screen says PSX, Press eject and put in a non-burned ps2 disc and press eject to close the tray.
6. Once it says PS2 DVD Press X or O and it will turn purple now use the slide card to move the pin to the right, this is hard to explain so watch the video. (I heard your suppose to use a high table of contents game but what the hell, I just use a ps2 disc that gets read errors when I try to play it.)
7. Now insert the Burned game, DO NOT USE THE EJECT BUTTON PUSH THE TRAY SHUT and use the slide card to move the pin to the left. PRESS THE X BUTTON NOT O and the Burned game will load.

Congrats you can play Burned Games.

You can find a great video of how to use the slide card here:
Code: Select all
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8AlMgWza30&mode=related&search
(AND NO YOUR PS2 DOES NOT HAVE TO LOOK LIKE A PIECE OF CRAP LIKE HIS.)

There are rumors that this will were down your laser from playing burned games but I’ve done it for over 6 months now without a single problem.[/list]
